Empowere(Dogs) was started after training my first service dog for myself. I did it during the hardest point in my life, completely at rock bottom. My therapist had come out to my house to work with me and met my most recent addition, a completely untrained stray, telling me I should turn her into my service dog. I hadn’t even considered that I could qualify for one and took on the chance as a fun challenge and something to give me purpose. Little did I grasp the difference she would come to make in my life. Seven months later, my dog was fully trained and no one would have known she was trained at home if I hadn’t said anything.
I spent every dollar I had trying to save my life the previous few years and was struggling just to hang on. After training my service dog and a few that had been dumped on property, I began fostering difficult dogs who would have, for the most part, been put down for behavioral issues and/or aggression, helping teach and grow their confidence, giving them the skills to succeed in life, and helping turning their lives around. I would then donate them to their forever homes (as pets, emotional support, or service dogs) where they could make a difference in someone else’s life. I got compliments about them along the way from people and suggestions that I was meant to be a dog trainer. I figured if I was capable of helping them and their owners through them, then I could believe in myself enough to start EmpowereDogs, constantly learning and researching more as time progressed. For education is unending and I could never know everything. I will forever be the student, but if I’m lucky, perhaps I can be a student and a master at the same time.
